Welcome to the home of the Virtual Swords Club
Membership Information

How Much Does it Cost?

The costs of membership for the Virtual Swords club for 2012 are as follows:

  • Junior Membership (Under 21 as at January 1): $130
  • Senior Membership (21 or over as at January 1): $190

The membership cost is the same in all States, and includes full State affiliation (and therefore AFF capitation).  If you have already paid your State affiliation when you join Virtual Swords, the cost is only $45.  An optional add-on of $70 is for an FIE license fee, which is necessary to compete Internationally.

How Do I Join?

Click on this link to join and pay by secure transaction using Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal.  You can use your existing Fencing Victoria login and password, and you will be taken to a special Virtual Swords page within the Fencing Victoria system, where you can then pay for both your Fencing Victoria affiliation and Virtual Swords club membership all at once.  Please call 0413 487 640 if you need any help at all with this.

Does it Matter Where I Live?

You are able to join the Virtual Swords club wherever you live.  If you live in a State that has its own fencing association, we may be able to affiliate you through that State body.  Otherwise, special arrangements will be made with the AFF as required.

Is Virtual Swords the Club for Me?

The Virtual Swords club is a fencing club without a home.  Well, it has a home, but it's on the internet.

Who would want to join a club with no home?  The Virtual Swords club would suit you if you:

  • Do not want to be a member of a traditional ("bricks and mortar") club, but still want to enter State, National, and maybe International fencing competitions; or
  • Wish to only attend State or National squad training, but not be part of a traditional club; or
  • Only occasionally train at a traditional fencing club (and pay a strip fee), but still wish to enter State, National, and maybe International fencing competitions; or
  • Are a member of another fencing club that is not affiliated with its respective State fencing association; or
  • Live in a State where you would prefer to be affiliated with a different State's fencing association; or
  • Live in a State that does not have its own fencing association; or
  • Live out of Australia, but still wish to compete for Australia overseas; or
  • Want to pay membership fees to train at a traditional club, but wish to represent the Virtual Swords club in competitions (you can do both!).

The Virtual Swords club is not for you if you:

  • Wish to be a member of, train regularly at, and represent a traditional fencing club; or
  • Enjoy the social atmosphere of a traditional fencing club; or
  • Don't wish to enter State, National, or International Competitions; or
  • Wish to have a (full) representative voice in your State fencing association; or
  • Are not a partipative fencer.

The Virtual Swords club is not meant to replace (or displace) any existing fencing club - in fact, the opposite - the Virtual Swords club will actively work with existing clubs to benefit members wherever there is a potential synergy involved.

Club Activities in 2010

2010 was the first year of operation for Virtual Swords, and it was huge.  We had almost 40 members - the largest number of fully affiliated members across all clubs in Victoria.  A quick glance at the Victorian, NSW, and National (AFF) rankings shows some great results from Novice and Under-13s right up to Open and Veterans.

In 2010, Virtual Swords members featured in the top three final rankings in Victoria in all weapons and age categories competed.

Some notable achievements for 2010:

  • Vicky Wilks - Gold medal in the World Veterans Championships
  • Evelyn Halls - Gold medals in all AFF events contested, Gold medal in the Commonwealth Championships, and top 8 finish in a World Cup.
  • Adrian Quintarelli - Silver medal in the Commonwealth Veteran Championships
...and at the Junior level,
  • Leah Tausan - Gold medal in an AFF Open circuit event
  • TC Reynolds - Gold medals in NSW and US Southern Regional Championships (U13s), and NSW and Queensland Championships (U15s)
In Victoria in 2010, Virtual Swords consistently fielded one of the highest number of Victorian competitors at State and National competitions, and at the State level, averaged the highest ranking across all clubs for all events.  Almost 70 per cent of Virtual Swords members competed at National level in 2010.
Where did your fees go in 2010?  The club pays the entry fees for all team competitions at a State and National level.  Virtual Swords also undertook some behind-the-scenes cost contribution for some initiatives which benefited a number of members.
